Two of the UK's most breath-taking National Parks await you as you travel up hill and down dale on this fantastically contrasting inland walkway.
The starting point for your adventure is in Kirkby Stephen, with its legendary church and the tale of its ‘bound devil’, this market town is nestled between the North Pennines and the Yorkshire Dales, an area made famous by the veterinary surgeon James Herriot. Certainly worth a visit before you set off on the first part of your walk, it is here you spend your first few days crossing the Pennines, the great divide of the North of England, with its high mountains and stunning views following the course of the River Swale. A difficult walk across mountainous terrain, but with the reward of seeing native wildlife in its natural habitat, stunning geological formations and windswept, rugged open landscapes as you walk onward to your goal of the North East Coast.
During this walk you have the chance to spend a night in Richmond, a market town which grew around the fortification of the castle, with its cobbled alleyways and remarkable views of the Yorkshire Dales from the castle keep. From here the more challenging terrain gives way to the more open North York Moors with its heather strewn pathways and verdant green valleys. More pretty and welcoming villages with strange and evocative sounding names such as Danby Wiske, Blakey Ridge and Clay Top Bank await you each night, giving you the chance to unwind from a hard days walking in one of the local pubs or inns swapping stories with your fellow walkers of the path. Journeys end finds you arrive at Robin Hood’s Bay, where a well-earned dip of your toes in the chilly waves of the North Sea signals the end of a tiring but thoroughly satisfying walking adventure.
