In 122 AD the Emperor Hadrian ordered the construction of a wall to hold back the barbarian hordes threatening to overwhelm his hold on Northern England, and the outer most limits of the Roman Empire. Today this UNESCO historic World Heritage site draws more visitors than the Emperor could have even imagined!
Starting your 84 mile adventure on the banks on the River Tyne at Wallsend you follow this iconic structure across the border region between England and Scotland onward across stunning open terrain strewn with the remains of the work of both the legionnaires and the auxiliary workers entrusted with the security of an empire. Following their departure from the British Isles the wall was a source of building material for the local area, and many buildings close to the wall attest to this.
Walk the Trail suggests whetting your appetite for the walk with a visit to the Great North Museum, Newcastle upon Tyne, which provides a wealth of information regarding the wall. As you travel on this epic journey through time as well as the most breath-taking in the North of England, several smaller museums and visitors centre provide you with not only a respite from the weather and the walking, but also the chance to learn a little more about this iconic landmark.
Your journey takes in milecastles, turrets, encampments, temples and forts before reaching the North West village of Bowness-on-Sea giving you the chance to photograph not only expanses of wonderful views of open countryside and native wildlife but also two thousand years’ worth of history.
Walk the Trail offers 2 itineraries along this route to cater for all levels of walker.
